6 Stages, 70 Colleges: Kurukshetra University’s Zonal Arrives

Somewhere in Panipat this week, a college orchestra is tuning in a tent, a rangoli is being drawn against the clock, and a speech is being rehearsed in a corridor by a student who wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. The 49th Zonal Youth Kestival of Kurukshetra University’s Karnal zone returns. From Wednesday, 14th October to Friday, 16th October, the event is slated to take place at Arya PG College, Panipat. The venue is all set to host about 2,000 students from approximately 70 colleges across Karnal and Panipat.

The festival celebrates the diversity of student talent, offering a platform for young artists to showcase their skills across literature, music, theatre and dance, while keeping Haryanaโ€™s rich cultural heritage alive. Students will compete across a range of events, with six specially arranged stages accommodating simultaneous performances and competitions. From literary presentations to musical and theatrical acts, the festival brings together varied forms of artistic expression under one roof.

A key highlight of the festival is its emphasis on Saang, Haryanaโ€™s traditional folk theatre-dance form. Combining music, dance, dialogue and storytelling, Saang has long served as a medium for narrating historical tales, folklore and social themes. Its inclusion places the spotlight on a regional art form that has faced declining visibility among younger audiences. Through such cultural initiatives, the university continues to create opportunities for students to engage with and carry forward Haryanaโ€™s performing arts traditions.

The festival also reflects the role of university youth festivals in encouraging students to explore creative pursuits beyond the classroom. By bringing together participants from different colleges, it provides a space for young performers to exchange ideas, develop their skills and experience the spirit of inter-college competition.

With its blend of traditional performances and contemporary talent, the Zonal Youth Festival is more than a competition. It is an opportunity for students to celebrate their cultural roots, discover new forms of expression and keep regional artistic traditions relevant to the next generation.
