There was a point where “Kya Wo Pyaar Tha” was impossible to escape. Somebody in every friend group had this saved. Someone was definitely reposting lines from it on Instagram. And at least one person was dramatically listening to it after making terrible relationship decisions.

Which makes sense once you watch it.

Shubham Khillari performs this piece like he’s remembering something out loud and the crowd just happens to be there for it.

That’s what makes the poem connect so easily.

It starts with that slightly awkward, hopeful energy of liking someone for the first time. The overthinking. The tiny moments that suddenly start feeling important. The kind of emotions people usually pretend they’re too emotionally stable to relate to.

But one of the best things about the performance is how naturally he threads humour through the entire piece.

The funny lines arrive so casually that the audience almost catches themselves reacting. One second the room is laughing at a painfully accurate observation about relationships, and the next second the poem quietly slips into something more emotional without losing its flow.

That balance is really hard to pull off.

A lot of relationship poetry either becomes too heavy too quickly or hides behind jokes the whole time. This piece sits comfortably in between. Warm, self-aware, slightly dramatic, occasionally funny, and honest enough to feel real.

Then slowly, without making a huge dramatic turn, the piece drifts into heartbreak.
